The Community Social Planning Council has a new resource on the business and public policy case for Community Investment Funds. A policy brief published today is available on our website. The brief outlines the experience in other places with similar community investment opportunities that offer a social and economic return. Recommendations are made in the brief, calling on the BC Government to introduce similar tax incentives and enabling regulations as exist in places like Nova Scotia.
Through the performance of its mission the Cool Aid Community Health Centre carries out research, prevention and health care for a population whose primary condition is poverty. This is an essential service without which our community would be less and the people it serves would be without a medical “home”. ...“if you don’t have access to medical care, that’s poverty”.
2014 living wage calculation: you need to work almost two full-time minimum wage jobs just to make ends meet in Greater Victoria. “The living wage is an important tool to illustrate the problem of child poverty and working poverty in Greater Victoria,” says Rupert Downing, Executive Director of the Community Social Planning Council. “It calls on employers to pay wages that reflect the actual costs of living in our community, and policymakers to step up to the plate to protect affordability for everyone.”
