Adolescence is a significant period in human development that is crucial to establishing positive health and social behaviours. At no other time, except in infancy, do human beings develop so rapidly in a short period. During adolescence our body weight doubles, we become capable of reproducing, and we begin to take on more responsibilities. Because of rapid transformations in brain development, youth experience emotions intensely. Adolescence is a time of concentrated social, emotional, and cognitive development. To support youth development, research increasingly illustrates the importance of providing young people with enriching opportunities through high-quality out of school time (OST) programs. The YPQI ensures that organizations continuously strive for quality youth programming year after year.
